I have owned my '22 1290 SAS for 1 month now. I have almost 700 miles on it. Except for one episode while riding and getting a "key not in range" warning (it was in my jacket pocket), I have had no issues. I'm not 800km from a dealership, but I do live in Northwest Arkansas.
So, if you want a more narrow bike and more off-road oriented should go for the R version. If you are aiming more on-road you should go for the 1290 SA. "Seems like an 1190 would work with the addition of a few farces" : in the end the items you will add (cruise, windshield, rotopax for extra fuel, etc.) will end up the price of a 1290 SA.

I just put a lithium battery in my new KTM SAS to replace the heavier conventional battery. I went from 8.6 lbs to just 3 lbs and I went from 230 CCA to 360 CCA. I lost 5.5 lbs and gained 130 CCA. That is a win win. That is a lot of weight high up in the motorcycle and changes how the bike handles.
