You can get away with a 1.5 way but it's not ideal. But to what in saying, if you weld the diff while it's in the housing, the heat can get to thr bearings as well as housing.
Flyin Miata sells an adapter. All you have to do is drill and tap 2 holes into the intake manifold. Thats the hardest part. Use a stock 1.8 exhaust header and either have someone drill a hole and weld a bung onto it for your 02 sensor or do it yourself if you can. Then the only other issue is the intake.

This past year I have worked on getting the suspension sorted out, and I am now running 700f and 350r springs with Hoosier 205/50/15 SM6’s. The car handles great. I am thinking of power goals of 180
The most a Miata ever came with from the factory (in the US) is 160 HP. You can have a lot of fun with that much power thanks to the Miata’s weight, but eventually, we all end up wanting more. While it’s possible to add a VVT (variable valve timing) to the engines missing it, this will only really give you a mid-range bump in power.
